Custom Homecoming Shirts: Ideas, Timelines, and Why You Don't Need a Minimum Order

Every fall it goes the same way. The theme gets picked, the game gets scheduled, and then someone on the spirit committee realizes the shirts — the thing everyone will actually wear and keep — still haven't been ordered. This is the guide for that person.
The ideas, by group
Class shirts. The classic: each grade in its own color, class year big on the back. Because modern printing doesn't charge per color, each class can have completely different artwork — the seniors' design doesn't have to match the freshmen's, and neither adds cost.
Student section and theme nights. Blackout, whiteout, neon, decades night — shirts that match the theme turn a crowd into a wall. These are the orders that come in latest, and they're also the most forgiving: one bold design, one shirt color, easy to turn quickly.
Powderpuff and spirit games. Names and numbers on the back make these keepers instead of one-night shirts. Individual names used to be a printing headache; now each shirt can be personalized without a surcharge for being different from its neighbor.
Clubs, teams, and court. Band, cheer, dance, homecoming court — small groups of eight to fifteen people. These are the orders that used to get turned away for being too small. They aren't anymore, and the next section is why.
Why "we only have 22 people" isn't a problem
Traditional screen printing carries setup cost — every color in the design needs its own screen, so small orders carry a big fixed cost and shops set minimums to make the math work. That's where "48-piece minimum" policies come from, and it's why a 22-shirt order gets quoted like a 48-shirt order at a lot of places.
DTF printing — the method we run most homecoming orders on — has no screens and no setup. A 22-piece order is priced as 22 pieces. Full-color artwork costs the same as one-color artwork. And it prints on any fabric in any color, so navy shirts, black shirts, and cotton are all fair game.
If your class has 22 people, order 22 shirts. If three more people join late, order 3 more. That's the whole policy.
Larger runs of a simple design — say, 300 one-color student-section tees — can still favor screen printing, and we'll tell you when they do. We run both methods in house, so the quote steers to whichever is genuinely cheaper for your order, not whichever we happen to sell.
The timeline that keeps everyone calm
Three weeks out: the comfortable zone. Time to see a mockup, fix the typo in the class year, and change a shirt color without stress.
Two weeks out: still fine. Have your artwork (or your idea — we can build the artwork) and your size counts ready when you reach out.
Inside two weeks: ask. Because DTF skips setup, rush jobs are sometimes possible when a screen-printing queue couldn't take them. The honest answer depends on the week, so the sooner you call, the better your odds.
Make the shirts pay for themselves
Plenty of committees turn the shirt order into the fundraiser: buy at wholesale, sell at a few dollars over, and the spirit budget funds itself before the game. No-minimum ordering makes this nearly risk-free — you can take pre-orders first and print exactly what was sold, instead of guessing and eating leftover boxes of larges. We wrote a full guide to running shirt fundraisers this way, and homecoming is the easiest one of the year.
Design tips from the print floor
Bold beats busy — a design read across a football field needs big shapes and high contrast. Put the year somewhere; it's what makes the shirt a keepsake instead of laundry. And check your school's rules on logo and mascot use before finalizing artwork — a quick email to the athletic office saves a reprint.
Ready when your committee is
We print homecoming orders for schools and groups across Kenosha, Waukegan, and the surrounding communities every fall — in house, with no order minimums. Send us your idea, your shirt color, and a rough headcount, and we'll send back a mockup and a price. If you're inside two weeks, reach out anyway — tell us your date and we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
Homecoming is close
Send your idea, shirt color, and headcount. We'll come back with a mockup and a price, and we'll work backward from your homecoming date.
